The Association of Friends of Soroka Medical Center, under the direction of Ms. Deborah Oren, strives as volunteers to recruit funds for construction and procurement of essential medical equipment and installations to improve and advance the medical care at Soroka.

Every year anew the residents of the Negev demonstrate their generosity and strong ties to the hospital.  About three million shekels were pledged during the recent evening event that took place at the Narnia Convention Center (Ulamei Narnia) in Beersheva. All the proceeds are earmarked exclusively for the construction of the new protected Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Soroka.

Participating in the evening event were MK Shimon Solomon of the Yesh Atid party and Chair of the Pro-Soroka Lobby in the Knesset,  Prof. Rivka Carmi President of Ben-Gurion University,  Dr. Miki Sherf Clalit Health Services Deputy Director and Head of Clalit Health Services Hospitals Division, Dr. Ehud Davidson Director of Soroka Medical Center and Head of the Clalit Southern Region, Mr. Michael Mishori-Deri Director of Clalit Southern District,  Prof. Maty Lipschitz Chair of the Pediatrics Division at Soroka, Dr. Agi Golan Director of the Neonatology Department, heads of southern local councils, plant managers, and heads of workers committees.
Gracing the evening too with her presence was the internationally renowned actress and model Moran Atias, who is currently volunteering in the neonatal ward at Soroka and promoting joint projects with the hospital .

Among the outstanding donations was a million shekel contribution by Israel Chemicals Group. The pledge was announced by Dr. Ehud Davidson, Director of Soroka, on behalf of Mr. Nir Gilad, President and CEO of the Israel Corporation and Chair of Israel Chemicals, who also serves as Chair of the Friends of Soroka Medical Center.

Nir Gilad: “I look upon Soroka Medical Center as an important springboard in turning the Negev into a leading attractive area in Israel. The historic step of moving the main IDF bases to the Negev is in essence a realization of David Ben-Gurion’s vision. We sincerely believe that empowering Soroka will not only allow it to serve as a magnet for the best medical personnel, but also for strong populations who currently choose to crowd into the center of the country. I am confident that if we combine efforts, our initiatives and visions will prove to be an unstoppable force for the good of the Negev and the benefit of the residents.   It is Israel Chemicals and the Israel Corporation’s great privilege to continue to contribute to the growth of Soroka Medical Center. Recently we decided on a preplanned multi-year donation to help establish the Cancer Care and Research Center”.

Dr. Miki Sherf, Clalit Health Services Deputy Director and Head of Clalit Health Services Hospitals Division, pledged on behalf of Clalit Health Services to match the Israel Chemical Group’s donation of one million shekel.

The Neonatology Department at the Soroka Medical Center, directed by Dr. Agi Golan,  is the busiest and leading unit of its kind in Israel. Every year it cares for more than 2,300 newborn and more than 200 of them are very low weight preemies requiring  special neonatal intensive care. The neonatal unit was built in the 1980s to the most modern standards at the time that included exposure to daylight through windows and glass bricks in the ceiling. These features have turned the unprotected department into a deathtrap for the preemies due to the rockets fired from the south in recent years. Any military operation means the staff must swiftly evacuate the infants and the new mothers to safe quarters. Today, the neonatal and preemies department occupies two separate distanced areas, far from the delivery rooms. The distance between the buildings creates great hardship and handicaps for the professional staff too.

Dr. Ehud Davidson, Director of Soroka Medical Center: “The population of the Negev is growing and the opening of the new maternity center at Soroka has brought about an increase in the number of births there. Add this to the anticipated move of the Israel Defense Forces bases to the Negev, with a young population of childbearing age, and you have a rise in the number of births to some 17,000 annually. This highlights the need to build a new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and increase the number of hospital beds in line with the population growth”.
Dr. Davidson added: “The estimated construction cost of the new protected preemie ward is 66 million shekels. I thank all of the dear donors and the Friends of Soroka who opened their hearts and pockets to fulfill this important goal. This gala evening is the grand opening of the fundraising effort and we must all join forces to recruit additional resources”.
