Dear Friends,
As the season for year-end charitable donations is upon us, we ask you to please support Soroka with a gift of any size. We depend on philanthropy to accomplish our capital project goals and to support our mission to provide the most advanced healthcare possible to the undeserved population of Southern Israel.
This past year was extremely successful for Soroka. We began with the opening of the inpatient Rehabilitation Unit, the first for the entire South of Israel. The year ended with a remarkable deployment of modern communication tools, using Facebook LIVE to offer a rare glimpse into the human brain. Click below to view a selection of cutting-edge procedures filmed at Soroka. The live procedures included brain surgery to remove a tumor, brain catheterization to assess an aneurism and prevent stroke, an MRI scan of a fetal brain to rule our congenital defects, hypnosis to treat complex migraines, and an MRI to assist in the diagnosis of a child with epilepsy. We are in awe. Many thanks to our amazing medical staff for bringing this rare, unfiltered view from the heart of Soroka to our followers around the world. The dialogue is in Hebrew but the pictures paint a thousand words. Read the article on Times of Israel.

We are very fortunate to welcome new leaders to our ranks. Miriam Arond and Dr. Jay Selman have been elected to the American Friends Board of Directors. Miriam, president of Miriam Arond Consulting, a brand strategy consultancy and former Director of The Good Housekeeping Institute, is an expert in media, marketing, and content development. Dr. Jay Selman is the head of AFSMC Medical Advisory Board and Chief of Neurology at Blythedale Children’s Hospital. His special areas of interest include migraines, learning disabilities, ADHD, autism, epilepsy, traumatic brain injury, autoimmune encephalitis (ANMDARE) and other neurological disorders. Dr. Michael Ackerman, recently retired from a distinguished career as an Anesthesiologist at Sound Shore Medical Center, has joined the Medical Advisory Board and has taken on leadership roles in planning community outreach events to help Soroka’s visiting professionals connect with supportive audiences. He recently organized the visit of Dr. Doron Zahger, the chief of Cardiology at Soroka, for a briefing and open discussion on hot topics in Cardiology. Angela Retelny, Managing Director at Platinum Drive Realty, has assumed Chairmanship of our April 2017 Gala Benefit Dinner. Angela’s passion for Soroka’s lifesaving mission and desire to make a difference for the healthcare of the underserved southern half of Israel is inspirational, and combined with her extraordinary talents will help us create a magical night to remember, while achieving the gala's goal to support women’s health projects at Soroka.
We are truly humbled to have the chance to serve Soroka Medical Center. With best wishes for a Healthy and Happy Holiday Season, filled with fulfillment and many blessings.

Terror confronts us with a moral dilemma strikingly relevant to our times. The audience is cast as the jury for the trial of a young pilot after he shoots down a hijacked flight headed for a stadium full of people. It’s up to you to decide whether he’s a murderer or a hero.
Gregory Mosher is one of the most important theater director's of our time, having produced nearly 200 plays between New York and London. Recent work on Broadway includes A View from the Bridge by Arthur Miller and That Championship Season by Jason Miller. The legendary artistic director of Lincoln Center, recipient of a Drama Desk Special Award, and two-time Tony Award-winner is bringing this exhilarating and thought-provoking show to the Colony for a limited run. Benefit Tickets will go on sale in January, beginning at $75.

Canadian Friends of Soroka Medical Center Launch
|
Canadian Friends of Soroka Medical Center was launched by Hy Eliasoph, President of the Board and Francesca David, Executive Director, on November 2, 2016, with greetings from Galit Baram, the newly arrived Consul General from Israel. Over 40 guests were introduced to the unique and vital role that Soroka Medical Center plays in the lives of the residents of the Negev and as the front line of medicine during times of conflict. Professor Michael Bar Zohar, the internationally acclaimed author, speaker, researcher, two-time member of the Knesset and a high ranking IDF officer who served as a paratrooper in four wars, held the audience spellbound as he recounted personal stories and intimate moments he spent with David Ben Gurion and many other famous Israeli political leaders during the past fifty years. Professor Bar Zohar also shared the story about events leading to the establishment of Soroka, and about its longstanding relationship with its neighbor Ben Gurion University. One of the highlights of the evening was the showing of rare clips from a video documenting the life of David Ben Gurion, and including Golda Meir, Yitzhak Rabin and Shimon Peres among other Israeli leaders, produced by Professor Bar Zohar over 40 years ago.
